This years rendition of Balkan Championships took place in small
but friendly city of Varvarin in southeastern Serbia. An organizers’s
obvious effort to make everyone feel comfortable and welcome,
together with very good quality of competition, made for an overall
event that will not be forgotten soon.
As expected, the national team of Bulgaria dominated the
championships, highly powered by the IFBB renowned superstar and
world champion Hristomir Hristov, who scored both the category and
overall victories. The Serbian team took the second place, winning
all the titles in women’s categories. Very encouraging and
refreshing were the performances of several young competitors – from
Bulgaria’s outstanding junior Atanas Dimitrov, to Serbia’s 80 kg
runner-up Lepomir Bakic and classic bodybuilding winner Svetozar
Milenkovic, who all lay great hope for interesting Balkan
Championships in the future. In women’s part of the competition,
renowned competitors Ljuba Pantovic (in body fitness) and Branka
Jovanovic (bodybuilding) handily won their categories, pretty much
as expected.
We hope that the next Balkan Championships is going to take place in
Turkey or in Bosnia and Herzegovina, but the organizers won’t have a
small task in surpassing this years rendition in quality of
competition.
The organizer of this event, the Municipality of Varvarin, headed by
it’s President, Mr. Zoran Milenkovic, and the Bodybuilding Gym
“Konan” run by the owner, Mr. Branislav Lukic, did their best to
make this event the most successful Balkan Championship ever,
regarding the quality of competitors and also the organization.
The Balkan Championships in Varvarin were also supported by the
Serbian Ministry of Sport and Youth, and the competition was opened
by the vice Minister of Sport and Youth, Dr Goran Kreclovic.
The General Secretary of the Balkan Federation, Mr. Milivoje
Jevremovic, is also one of the most accountable IFBB officials for
the successful organization of the Balkan Championships.
All the mentioned officials were awarded for their contributions
with IFBB Medals on behalf of our President, Mr. Rafael Santonja.
