INSTITUTIONAL
ASPECTS OF THE IFBB
The IFBB was founded by brothers Joe and Ben Weider in 1946 in Montreal,
Canada.
On December 30th, 1969, was constituted the International Federation of
Bodybuilders Incorporated (Federation Internationale des Culturistes
Incorporée), as a non profit organization under the Canadian laws. This
was done under the guidance of Oscar State, OBE (1911-1984), a world-renowned
sports official, who advised Ben Weider that in order for the IFBB and
the sport to achieve legitimacy and to be recognized by the General
Association of International Sports Federations, it must be set up as a
legal entity with a constitution and rules.
After the election of Mr Rafael Santonja as IFBB President in Ostrava;
on July 6th 2007, was agreed, in a Joint Declarations signed by Ben
Weider and Rafael Santonja, the liquidation and dissolution of the
International Federation of Bodybuilders Incorporated, deciding the pass
of the balance accounts to the new non profit association that was going
to be built in Spain, to follow as universal successor of the IFBB
activities.
On September 14th 2007 was constituted in Spain the
"Asociación-Federación Internacional de Fisicoculturismo y Fitness",
adopting the shape of a non profit association.
The "Asociación-Federación Internacional de Fisicoculturismo y Fitness"
founded on September 14th 2007, under the Spanish Jurisdiction, in
conformity with the Organic Law 1/2002 that regulates the Association
Rights in Spain, is the current juridical ground of the IFBB; and it is
the holder of all its rights and obligations, based in the already
mentioned agreement from July 6th 2007, in which was established the
universal succession of the International Federation of Bodybuilders
Incorporated (Federation Internationale des Culturistes Incorporée).
